The MH should be on the anchor side of the tie.
4) Conduct a standard tie off with a half hitch on a bight around the three strands keeping it snug to the MH.
5) Secure the half hitch with an overhand on a bight wrapping the 3 strands.

Results
A load-releasable 3:1 hitch that you can use between a pulley, passing a knot or untensioning a locked lowering device or locked up prussiks.

Knots To Know

<img style="display:block; Martin Petrik, with the Colorado State Patrol.

The vehicle was found by a Durango snowboarder who pulled over on the side of the highway and noticed the crunched vehicle at the bottom of the cliff. He reported the crash at 4:10 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities confirmed the driver died Sunday night. Rescue workers in San Juan County retrieved the body Monday, and they hoped to positively identify the victim today.

It was unknown how the crash occurred.

Authorities were investigating the possibility the victim is a woman who was reported missing Saturday morning in Durango.

The missing woman was identified as Antonetta Massey, 43, of Las Vegas, who was visiting Durango, said Sgt. Dan Shry with the Durango Police Department. But he stressed that no positive identification had been made.

In the news...

Avalanche Companion Rescue Workshop

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FdzYIfhCkVw/SyZ0UObaOiI/AAAAAAAAAYo/qzN1VuEufDc/s320/DiggingStrategies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415143492778867234" />
The workshop on Saturday was a big success. An under appreciated and very cheap piece of equipment, the whistle can be used in an SAR situation and is good for any environment where verbal/radio communication is limited e.g. rope team, searching.

A whistle is good for any backcountry/marine endeavor.

This is the loudest one yet. A ranger on horseback discovered a tent off-trail deep in the wilderness in the southeast corner of San Juan County.

San Juan County coroner Keri Metzler said the ranger “saw a tent that didn’t look quite right. It looked like it might have had a snow load on it.”

He discovered what he thought to be human remains inside a sleeping bag.
“The ranger got back Thursday,” Metzler said.

On Friday, a helicopter flew in San Juan County deputy Bruce Conrad and four search-and-rescue team members, Jeff Barr, Clark Damron, Joe Eppler and Kyle Tisdale.
Metzler said there were no signs of foul play.

“It appears pretty natural,” she said.

“He did leave a note,” Metzler said, though she said it was not a suicide note.
Officials suspect he may have tried to set a tree on fire as a signal for help at some point.

Officials also noted that they could not find records of any vehicle abandoned at an adjoining trailhead.

A page from a National Geographic magazine from Oct. 8, 2008 was also found. Metzler said it appears the body had been there since last fall.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office reported on Wednesday that they were still trying to locate any relatives of the man while awaiting a confirmation of his ID.
His note read (with misspellings) is as follows:

“My name is (information withheld). Kelley, 48, was last heard from in late September and had been living near Lime Creek, not far from the Cascade turn on U.S. Highway 550, north of Purgatory in San Juan County.

At the time, rescue workers located his camp but never were able to find Kelley. San Juan and La Plata County search-and-rescue teams helped with the search, and the Dolores Dog Team also assisted.

On Sunday morning, hikers spotted the body and alerted authorities. Rescue teams from La Plata and San Juan counties were working on the recovery effort throughout the day.

Knowlton said the body would be taken to Hood Mortuary in Durango, and an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death."

<img style="float:right; Here is what he said, although he doesn't remember the year of this photo.

"By mid day Sat all the passes were closed (so no one was leaving...captive audience). It kept snowing...Andy Gleason -- who worked for CDOT as head forecaster -- was part of the school and finagled a special event by inviting all the student down to the howitzer site to watch them blast the Champions. That's what that photo is about. But nothing of any significance ran during the contol work. That afternoon -- and it just kept coming down -- we were up at the Shrine (all normally out of town field work had to be relocated to in town) doing the field work and as were were standing debriefing something, the Champions ran naturally. I got a photo of it (mostly just looks like a big power clound in the canyon) but what an experience for the students that year."

USGS Quads we use

A bit related to the GPS stuff.
